Supported platforms

Desktop systems, supported processors and installation.

Reviewed against the application source on 5 October 2026. Focale is in active development; available commands and published packages may differ by build.

Desktop targets

These are the targets configured in the current application. The download section is the source of truth for packages actually published for a version; a configured target does not guarantee an installer is already available.

Desktop targets
PlatformProcessorPackage / requirement
Linuxx86-64Complete ZIP bundle; GTK 3 and a system compatible with the Ubuntu 22.04 build baseline.
Windowsx86-64Native installer; use the requirements supplied with the published release.
macOSApple Silicon / arm64DMG containing Focale.app; deployment target macOS 12 or later.
macOSIntel / x86-64Separate Intel DMG; deployment target macOS 12 or later.

Install on Linux

Extract the entire ZIP into a folder, close Focale, then run the included install.sh from that folder. The script installs for the current account in ~/.local/opt/focale and registers the launcher and file types.

GTK 3 is required by the desktop application. The installer also needs shared-mime-info. Copying only the executable omits its libraries and assets. A managed Flatpak channel is separate from the direct ZIP channel.

./install.sh

Install on macOS

Choose Apple Silicon or Intel to match your Mac, open the DMG and copy Focale.app to Applications. Keep the complete app bundle.

System signing status is shown with the published package. The source build target alone does not establish that every macOS version or device has been tested.

Install on Windows

Use the x64 installer provided for your release, and save projects before replacing an installed version. A Microsoft Store package is a separate managed channel.

The direct updater is not used for managed Store or Flatpak installations: updates belong to the corresponding distribution channel.

Memory and updates

There is no measured universal minimum RAM specification in this documentation. Document dimensions, bit depth, layer count and history all affect memory demand. Preferences → Performance sets payload budgets; codecs and the GPU can use additional memory.

Save and close documents before installing an update. Keep an earlier working project copy when changing application versions.
