Actions (.faction)
A portable action set with ordered steps and paint resources.
Reviewed against the application source on 5 October 2026. Focale is in active development; available commands and published packages may differ by build.
Use in the application
Use the Actions panel to import, export, record and replay an action set. Review each step before applying it; File → Automate → Batch applies a chosen action to multiple files.
File structure
UTF-8 JSON with an explicit format tag and version. The current reader and writer use version 1. The example shows the library envelope; the full reference describes the complete value schemas.
The root contains one set, its actions and their steps, plus sampledTips and patterns. A step stores id, enabled, operation and typed parameters. Active primary/dual brush tips and patterns are embedded so paint steps do not depend on another installation’s catalogue.

}Validation and limits
Maximum: 256 MiB, 2,048 actions and 32,768 steps; decoded tips 64 MiB and patterns 128 MiB. Import assigns fresh identities. Unknown operations and parameters are retained as unsupported and never executed by an older build.
Photoshop interchange
ATN import and export use only mapped operations for playback. Unsupported events remain disabled rather than approximated. Keep .faction as the portable native set, distinct from the application’s internal multi-set catalogue.
