Layer styles (.fstyle)
Editable layer effects and advanced blending presets.
Reviewed against the application source on 5 October 2026. Focale is in active development; available commands and published packages may differ by build.
Use in the application
The Styles panel captures or applies a layer style and imports or exports libraries. Applying a style is undoable; editing the catalogue does not modify open documents. Built-in styles are not exported.
File structure
UTF-8 JSON with an explicit format tag and version. The current reader and writer use version 1. The example shows the library envelope; the full reference describes the complete value schemas.
presets holds named style objects, optional groups, fillOpacity, effects and Blend If ranges. Enabled and disabled effects remain editable: this is not a library of rendered thumbnails.

}Validation and limits
Maximum: 16 MiB and 4,096 presets, with names and ids up to 4,096 UTF-16 code units and 32 group levels. Duplicate identities or malformed entries reject the whole import.
Photoshop interchange
ASL exchange keeps effects and blending options that Focale can reproduce. Embedded ASL pattern pixels are currently skipped; .fstyle retains the native editable representation.
