Brushes (.fbrush)

Portable brush settings, sampled tips and texture resources.

Reviewed against the application source on 5 October 2026. Focale is in active development; available commands and published packages may differ by build.

Use in the application

Use the Brushes panel to create, rename, import or export user presets. Edit → Define Brush Preset captures the visible selection or document as a sampled tip. Built-in brushes are not exported.

File structure

UTF-8 JSON with an explicit format tag and version. The current reader and writer use version 1. The example shows the library envelope; the full reference describes the complete value schemas.

presets contains named settings, including size, spacing, dynamics, texture and dual-brush options. assets embeds sampled tips as Base64 coverage, one byte per pixel. patterns embeds straight-alpha RGBA texture tiles, four bytes per pixel. Referenced resources travel with the library.

Validation and limits

The file is limited to 256 MiB, decoded sampled tips to 64 MiB and decoded patterns to 128 MiB. Dimensions, anchors, identifiers, byte counts and references are validated. A missing resource rejects the import.

Photoshop interchange

ABR import and export cover supported sampled and procedural brushes. Not every Photoshop setting maps exactly; keep .fbrush as the native backup.
